jump in the death toll from the nightclub blaze in santa maria, in brazil. officials telling cnn that 220 people are dead. 220. that is up from the 90 that we were originally told. this is among the deadliest fires of this type in history. it was ten years ago that 100 people were killed in the station nightclub fire in rhode island. this fire today in brazil, more than twice the size of the fire in rhode island. the cause of this fire, still under investigation. but reports say pyrotechnics may have caught some of the club's sound proofing on fire. in these kinds of disasters, people are more often killed by being trampled or by the smoke than by fire itself. we continue to watch these live pictures of this scene there. we will get some more information and a live report from brazil in just a few moments from now. >>> and back here at home, an ice storm making its way through the midwest. a major storm pushing through the plains into the great lakes, leaving as much as a half an inch of ice on roads, trees, power lines, heavy snow is also possible. i'm joined by samantha moore.

in the inferno, nearly half of them college students from the nearby campus. cnn's shasta darlington joins us live from santa maria, brazil. shasta, what can you tell us about these arrests? >> reporter: well, carol, they obviously give us some indication where these investigations are going. there have been a lot of reports that the club simply wasn't prepared for this kind of emergency. perhaps that its license was even expired, that the whole inferno could have been set off by a pyrotechnics show that the band members themselves were putting on. the fact that these people have been arrested certainly gives us some indication that this is the problem. now, i'm just a few steps away from the nightclub kiss where this fire tore out early sunday morning, killing 231 people. the investigators now still going through the clues, combing through the rubble. it's a bright, quiet day. people from santa maria gathered here. this was a different scene just a few hours ago. smoke filled the air when the first firefighters entered the nightclub, where shirtless men were already trying to rescue some of

future? cnn's mary snowis joining us. what's the latest on her condition? >> wolf frk we haven't heard from her doctors since they let us know that she was making excellent progress. an expert in blood clots said if unrelated the clots could be serious but the fact that it's being addressed is a good sign. on the day when sect hillary clinton was supposed to be getting ready to go back to work, she spent another day at the hospital. doctors discovered a blood clot in the vein between the brain and skull behind the right ear. they say she did not suffer a stroke or neurological damage. a doctor not involved in secretary clinton's case has treated cases like hers and calls them rare. what does this mean for the future? >> i think her future is as good as her past. she should recover from this. will be treated with blood thinners. i can't say how long because i don't know all of the circumstances but certainly minimum of three to six month, may well could be longer. in some rare cases, could be lifelong but many patients are on blood thinners for life. she should recover fully and get bac
